Welcome to the website of Thomas Redfern
          Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

If you have a muscle, tendon, bone or joint problem Mr Redfern will be happy to try to help you. Though he specialises in problems in the Shoulder and Elbow, he continues to offer a full Orthopaedic & Trauma service, including seeing patients with Neck and Back problems. He uses an ultrasound scanner in clinic to assist in "one stop" diagnosis of shoulder conditions. Most shoulder surgery is undertaken on a day case basis using modern keyhole techniques wherever possible. Mr Redfern offers innovative Platelet Rich Plasma Injections and Topaz micro-debridement for the management of Tennis Elbow.

Mr Redfern was educated at Haileybury College, Hertford and at the University of Manchester Medical School, qualifying as a doctor in 1976. He undertook basic surgical training in Salford and was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1979. After a period as a general surgical registrar in Bury, he became an orthopaedic trainee on the Liverpool circuit. He gained a Master of Orthopaedic Surgery from the University of Liverpool in 1984, writing a thesis on the design and outcomes of shoulder joint replacements. In 1990 he was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Leighton Hospital, Crewe continuing there until retirement in 2013. Since then he has continued in Private clinical practice and also offers NHS "Choose & Book" appointments in Crewe & Chester.

Mr Redfern has been a member of the British Elbow & Shoulder Society since 1988, having developed an interest in shoulder & elbow surgery in 1983 and now spends 95% of his clinical time on shoulder and elbow patients. He enjoys teaching and training both in the UK and internationally and is an examiner for the Inter-Collegiate Member of the Royal College of Surgeons exams.

Mr Redfern has prepared medico-legal reports for the Courts since 1983. He accepts instruction from Plaintiff and Defence solicitors in equal numbers, offering appointments within 2 weeks and reports are completed and returned within a further 2 weeks providing all relevant case notes and papers are available. Most cases relate to injuries of the Shoulder, Elbow, Neck and Lower Back. Home visits for severely disabled patients are available.
