Welcome to the website of Thomas R Redfern
          Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Mr Redfern has prepared medico-legal reports for the Courts since 1983. He accepts instruction from both Claimant and Defence solicitors and writes reports on Personal Injury and Medical Negligence claims. Reports are completed and returned within 3 weeks providing all relevant case notes and papers, radiology and passwords are available. Urgent cases can usually be accommodated and turned around more quickly.

Most cases relate to injuries of the Shoulder, Elbow & Neck. However, in the course of his Consultant career, Mr Redfern has operated on lumbar spinal conditions, has undertaken a comprehensive range of trauma reconstruction in both the upper and lower limbs and has undertaken in excess of 1500 lower limb prosthetic arthroplasties. He is happy to give a General Orthopaedic opinion on these matters. As a guide, the proportions of cases seen are Claimant Cases 23%, Defendant Cases 75% and Joint Instruction cases 2%.

Mr Redfern was educated at Haileybury College, Hertford and at the University of Manchester Medical School, qualifying as a doctor in 1976. He undertook basic surgical training in Salford and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1979. After a period as a general surgical registrar in Bury, he became an orthopaedic trainee on the Liverpool circuit. He gained a Master of Orthopaedic Surgery from the University of Liverpool in 1984, writing a thesis on the design and outcomes of shoulder joint replacements. In 1990 he was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Leighton Hospital, Crewe continuing there until retirement in 2013. He then continued in Private & NHS clinical practice at the South Cheshire Private Hospital until 31st May 2018. He no longer undertakes any clinical work but remains up to date by attending Conferences and by reading the Professional Journals.

Mr Redfern has been a member of the British Elbow & Shoulder Society since the inaugural meeting in 1988, having developed an interest in shoulder & elbow surgery in 1983. He is an active member of the North West Upper Limb Group and the Liverpool Orthopaedic Circle. He continues to teach trainee surgeons both in the UK and internationally and is a Supervising Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh at the IMRCS examinations. He is a Reviewer for articles submitted to the Journal of Elbow & Shoulder Surgery and for the Shoulder & Elbow.
